Marine Mammal and Turtle Division<\/a><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

The SWFSC Marine Mammal and Turtle Division conducts research on whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals, sea lions, and marine turtles primarily in the eastern North Pacific. Its work is guided by the Marine Mammal Protection Act, Endangered Species Act, and the Magnuson-Stevens Reauthorization Act, in addition to a variety of other domestic and international agreements and conventions. The NEFSC Passive Acoustics Research Group<\/a> uses innovative passive acoustic technologies to study the behavior, movements, and distribution of marine animals and how they contribute to their soundscape. It also evaluates the impacts of human-produced sounds on marine animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oregon Gray Whale License Plate holders <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Beaked Whale Expedition to the Eastern Pacific Gyre<\/em> is made possible with seed funding from the Marine Mammal Institute whale license plate program.<\/em> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In early 2019, the Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles and OSU Marine Mammal Institute launched a new license plate featuring a gray whale mother-and-calf pair and the phrase, \u201cCoastal Playground.\u201d Each sale and renewal of this special plate directly benefits research, education, and outreach at the Oregon State University Marine Mammal Institute, based at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
