Detection of 4 bertha armyworms in the North Valley (STPL) is concerning. According to a degree-day model for the area, the scouting/treatment window is Aug 19th-26th. Smaller larvae are more susceptible to insecticides, but unfortunately armyworm ‘strikes’ are not evident until larger larvae mature and begin to move across the field.
As sweet corn matures, corn earworm counts are expected to rise. The Northeastern IPM Center’s CEWIPM.org program offers many resources about best methods for trapping and predicting damage.
Continued scouting for diamondback moth is recommended. Look for windowpaning damage and tapered, light green larvae thar wriggle backwards when disturbed. Populations can rapidly increase in warmer temperatures.
